These rules are an alternative
to the "Monster Hunt" main quest (see DB rules, chapter
3), and a clarification.
First, the quest rules should
indicate that there's just one monster in the quest room -
note that this doesn't mean that there aren't any opponents in the
rest of the dungeon.
That said, if it bothers you
that there are other creatures living near this "terrible
monster", use on of the following quest rules instead:
1. Monster Hunt - The
Monster's Master
Rules: This quest always includes the Petty Warlord side quest (and no
other side quest) - that warlord is the one controling the monster. You need to solve this side quest too, or else the main quest doesn't count as solved.
2. Monster Hunt - The Small
Lair
Rules: The dungeon consists of a single passage with a single door. Behind that door is the quest
room where the monster lives.
Reward: APL * 200 gp
3. Monster Hunt - The Empty
Lair
Rules: There are no room encounter but the final quest room
encounter. Random encounters occur as usual though (these creatures
are merely "passing through" the dungeon and don't live
there). Note that this quest may never have side quests.
Reward: APL * 350 gp
