8-28-2005: Lords of
Goblinkind
Next up, and not too far away, is the first DB web-enhancement. Now
and again I've hinted at what this web-enhancement, entitled "Goblinoid
Adventures", will feature: new quests and opponents, new NPCs,
and a flow-chart campaign.
What I didn't tell you about is the main villains. This, like
the flow-chart campaign, is a new concept for Dungeon Bash.
The villains' main use is as the "end bosses" for that
campaign, but you can use them as the boss of an one-off
dungeoncrawl too.
Now, what makes a main villain in DB? Well, first off, each one has
special set of equipment unlike other opponents of their class and
level (apart from that, they have the standard stats to not
overcomplicate things). Ok, but as we all know what really makes a
villain is his background and motivation.
That will work like this: when it's time to check who the main
villain is, you roll on the main villain table. This table will tell
you the name of the villain, his race and class (his level depends
on your APL, as usual), his equipment, his body guards (if any). His
background then can be found in the main text, along with the
backgrounds of the other villains, sorted by name. Furthermore, each
entry details special rules (if any) for running this villain - for
instance, changes to the dungeon generator.
Some of you have said that the core DB rules are very vanilla (this review
at ENWorld, for instance) - a little too vanilla for some of
you. Well, that has been a conscious decision on my part - the DB
core rules are supposed to be the framework on which anything else
is based: expansions, your own house rules, and the
web-enhancements. They had to be vanilla in the same way that
the d20 core rules are, too.
Enter the web-enhancements. While the expansions will expand the
core rules (and will add flavor, although in a different way
than named villains and NPCs with backgrounds), the
web-enhancements' main job is to enhance the flavor of the game one
way or another. Therefore expansions expand, web-enhancements
enhance - another conscious decision ;)
